HOW IT STARTED
Fitness was thrust upon me when I joined the Royal Air Force 19 years ago, though not fitness as you may know it. It was a grueling experience, but one that I’m thankful for as it started me on the journey which has molded me into the person I am today. I’m now a strong, motivated individual with huge determination and discipline — everything you need as a fitness competitor.
My decision to jump on stage at Miami Pro happened not long after watching my husband Chris compete at the World Championships in 2015. I had attended a few of WBFF Pro Mirella Ingamells’ bootcamps a few months before, and was in awe of her amazing physique; I wanted a body just like that!
“I had just turned 35 so I thought it was as good a time to inspire others to follow their dreams and realise that it’s never too late to start something new”.
“The daily sacrifices that had to be made were tough. Working full time, and often away from home, meant that all my spare time was spent in the gym”.
I had just turned 35 so I thought it was as good a time as any. I too wanted to inspire others to follow their dreams and realise that it’s never too late to start something new. Prepping to compete on stage was the goal I needed to really push my body to its limits. I knew it would be a challenge; after all, getting up on stage in a bikini is not something I’d considered doing every day. Still, I was excited. My journey was not an easy one. Anyone that has gone through prep will sympathise, but for those that haven’t done it, you are in for an emotional roller coaster ride. I have had periods throughout my life that have been challenging and that required that I overcome obstacles, but nothing could have prepared me for this journey, nor has anything taught me so much about myself and what I’m capable of.
“I am so fortunate that my husband is equally passionate about competing so our lives are very much aligned. The support and advice he has given me as my coach has been incredible”.
The daily sacrifices that had to be made were tough. Working full time, and often away from home, meant that all my spare time was spent in the gym. If I wasn’t working I was either in the gym, prepping food, or sleeping. My world revolved around my daily fitness regime! I had to become very selfish during prep, and spending quality time with family and friends became increasingly difficult. I am so fortunate that my husband is equally passionate about competing so our lives are very much aligned. The support and advice he has given me as my coach has been incredible. He has been my rock, pushing me every single day to help me build the very best version of me.
“I started competing at the Miami Pro European Championships. Surprisingly, I placed 4th and 5th, but the hard work to follow was when it really paid off”.
I was astonished to become the Miami Pro Universe 2015 Ms Bikini Over 35s Champion, as well as to win 2nd place in Fitness Model Over 35s. I received two Pro Cards and my MP Pro status, so my dream really did come true that day! My love of fitness and competing continues to grow. I love how I feel inside and out; some have called me ‘a force to be reckoned with’. I’m not sure that I’m quite Wonder Woman yet, but I’m definitely working on it.
Thank you to CEO Angie Weston for giving athletes like me a reason to work hard every day, to get up there and show people that it’s never too late and hopefully inspire others to also follow their dreams.
